Who is L. Ron Hubbard, and what is Scientology?
One summer, while working with a bunch of college students, an odd debate started during lunch break. I was on the computer in break room but I had to stop what I was doing because the conversation was becoming heated. They were talking about Scientology. One kid was arguing that Scientology was completely bunk and full of crap--the others, yes multiple people, were arguing that Scientology was a legitimate religion with real reasoning. I was floored.
For many of us, we have seen either on TV or have heard from someone else about the religion--mostly because of celebrities (namely Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, John Travolta, and many other celebrities who follow it; wikipedias list of people http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Scientologists).
I couldn't believe it, I thought this was the most obviously false religion. I was surprised but I supposed it made sense; not that the religion actually makes sense, but instead that the common man would be able to believe such nonsense. You get enough people in the media to be bought in--then--you've won the minds of many.
I had done research before and had seen how obvious it was that it was false, yet, look at their headquarters website. Seemingly more convincing, right? This is how deception occurs:
http://www.scientology.org
Now lets do a commercial comparison--
This is how the "I'm a mormon" campaign has worked:
http://mormon.org/people
Now compare it to the Scientologists; see any similarities?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKs-u0q467U
Notice what they are fascinated about, and what they are highlighting:
"I'm a Mormon" emphasizes worldly successes, family, riches, fame, a more humble white-picket fence success, smarts, musicianship, positive thinking, self worth, self love, being happy, smiles, emotionalism, diversity, clean, pure, regular hardworking joes.
Scientology commercials do similar but slightly different. They emphasize good grades, worldly successes, diversity, freedom, being an average person learning to be above average.
This is what they emphasize: Works, Success, human accomplishment.
Like EVERY religion apart from the message of Jesus.
Tom Cruise says you have to earn being a scientologist:
http://www.tubechop.com/chop/UFBZ_uAbxS0
Both Mormonism and Scientology are purposely ambiguous to draw the listener, hoping they will look into it further and ask them questions. Compare these miniature testimonies and messages to this testimony and message!
Hey Christians, preachers, do you preach an ambiguous gospel? Confusion causes damage in the church. Arguably it has caused some of the greatest damages in the church.
See how this former mormon and now christian man explains the difference in this emphasis that mormon commercials are making versus what true Christianity is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KteUTbHInUY
Of course mormons cannot upright tell you what they believe. You wouldn't be able to believe it. You have to be warmed up into it; its the same for scientologists.
This is where the principle of "lying for the Lord" came from, here is an example of this being taught:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zA-rZQB-xQ
More examples of "lying for the Lord" in Mormonism:
(example from former mormons being taught to do so--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGSkcF89QlY)
(here's a longer description on this by a former mormon-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhNOx1TjeLg)
Interesting... I thought they said that they KNOW that God loves them and that they are a child of God? Doesn't God hate a lying tongue as Proverbs 6 says?
Are we ALL actually God's children? No scripture doesn't says so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvT531X1ndI
How often do people forget the sweet doctrine of ADOPTION? We are taken into this family of God, we are not always in it.
Who is L. Ron Hubbard though?
By definition of their church?
http://www.scientology.org/l-ron-hubbard.html
What is their treasure here? What are they prizing? All worship THEIR buddha, their Jesus. He saw suffering traveled lived a full life to them. Man's accomplishments. To them he is their Jesus because he lived a perfect life. But to someone who worship's human successes such as making money or travelling a lot of places--then he really was the perfect man! Yet, we know better than this. Anyone can see the difference here, but oh how few are willing--even among unbelievers, to say that Jesus was not a great man.
By definition of his great grandson?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciupsqkLLkQ
Whoa... hey, did he just disprove everything?.... wait, yea basically...
What are the codes of conduct, the laws for this religion?
Well this is what their church says:
http://www.scientology.org/what-is-scientology/the-scientology-creeds-and-codes.html
Where did man GET these inalienable rights? The emotions and opinions of a sinful man? Nice.
"Man is basically good..." Where did you guys decide that? This is not the belief that Jesus taught nor is it what God has taught. So lets ask ourselves a logical question, if there is evil in the world, how did it get there? How is there evil among men if it is not from within man? Wait but I thought they were good?!
Watch this short clip on how sin has deeply affected this world:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms2ajqlNHeI
I guess we're all just the greatest ever right? If we are all good then why do we need your religion L. Ron?
David Miscavige, president of their Church, describes in this segment of interview a key difference in Scientology. Sorry Miscavige, but you misunderstood Jesus and the gospel!
http://www.tubechop.com/watch/1823145
He said that all religions on earth are there in order to make man better. The purpose of what Jesus' taught was not to make man better. That is moralism. Moralism is the idea that we just need to get better, and do more works. Just strongly rebuked the Pharisees in places like Matthew 23 for their hypocritical images that they put up of being righteous, and for seeing themselves as right for having done good works. WE are not the answer, Jesus and his mercy is the answer. Miscavige is thinking in human terms; his goal is temporary, for temporary matters. If we make this world better, it will still, in the end, fall away. It will in the end fall away to nothingness.
Is that Loki at his throne? No, but just as deceptive.
What they do:

The E-Meter
The E-Meter is a modified ohmmeter which measures electrical resistance. Its meant to measure how a person feels. They do confessional counseling that involves reading their stress. Their goal is to get rid of their tensions through study and classes that the Scientology church provides. They see measured progress and have "experts" who "audit" them. Be careful of worshiping expertism, and physical evidence alone. These people are enticed by the physical aspect and yet it is not rooted in concrete truth.
What are the teachings rooted in? The teachings are rooted in the writings of L. Ron Hubbard who was literally a science fiction author. This is what he and Scientologists believe about aliens:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwfxuQtgGE0
You might ask yourself, how on earth could anyone believe this mumbo jumbo? People truly go to extravagant means to attempting to explain the universe without their being a God.
Growing up my best friend's mother and another one of my closest friends believed and argued that the complexity of constructs and the immediate leaps of knowledge in human society were unexplainable and surpassing human ability. They essentially believed that it was so superhuman for the technology that people had and resources that some outward force had to be at play. Their explanation? Aliens came to the earth at some point and had taught people how to construct society and had infused some of their DNA (these people had separately, without knowing each other believed this). Now the weird part is that this is a fairly accepted belief among intellectuals. Is this not the wildest thing you've ever heard?! Why is it easier for people to believe that there were aliens than there was an almighty God involved? The possibility that there is even technology that could help aliens travel to our planet let alone the insanity of the percentage of animals being on another planet let alone thinking of travelling or having the intelligence to figure it out... are all off the charts. This is easier for them to believe because it is an explanation, no matter how absurd, that explains what happened but allows them to still follow their exotic passions and not bow the knee to Christ. They want life to be their way. And ultimately they are slaves to their own desires.
What I find to be interesting is that this is a popular belief mostly among new age leaning people and in my experience who are generally well educated and with much cultural understanding. It seems the old lie that education is the answer for everything has never been true. People are often drawn to these ideas because they desire super spirituality, a feeling of oneness, and peace that surpasses understanding yet they do not want to follow the teachings of Jesus. How can they get around it? Some of these friends looked to, not necessarily actually believing, but had a hardy interest in horoscopes, aliens, mysteries, and conspiracies. There was an interest in the misunderstood and they liked the idea of the possibility of something amazing but true actually existing. Yet the plain and logical understanding of the universe not coming from nothing because nothing can only come from nothing, and the way that the Bible had been constructed with all of the witnesses and historical and archaeological proof was not worthy to be considered in their minds. Unless it was for ambiguous spiritual gain. What they want is God without the Personhood of God or the consequences or life change. They wanted their lifestyle but the awe that God provides. I am sure that there are other reasons that people could be led down these paths but we must not be afraid of the absurdity that people accept to go down these paths and remember what happens in man's heart. Do people not desire mystery and awe and wonder? Of course we do, but this is because God has put "eternity in the hearts of man."
2 Peter 2:19-20
English Standard Version (ESV)
19 They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. 20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.
Romans 1:18-21
English Standard Version (ESV)
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Jeremiah 17:9
English Standard Version (ESV)
9 The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?
Jeremiah 17:9
New International Version (NIV)

Scientologist leaders have thrown out different numbers for how many there are in their church worldwide. 8 million, 10 million are the most common numbers but one of the leaders later admitted to these numbers including anyone who has taken classes or tried a session by them even if they have later dropped out. The number is closer to about 56,000 worldwide. As in less than half of the population of people who are in attendance for Michigan's Football Stadium during rivalry match ups. 56,000 people is a lot in general, don't get me wrong. But Mormonism has 14.1 million people currently worldwide. And every year or couple years they add about a million to that. And yea, that ".1" barely thrown on at the end their swallowed up the population of practicing scientologists and then some. Saying that there are actually 10 million is a major deception. Nonetheless, size does not hold weight in the matter of truth. Otherwise the most popular religion of any given time, era, region could some how shift truth like an amorphous mass. Listen, if Paris Hilton can be a best-seller author... I think popular opinion can be discounted for its ability to discern truth. Perhaps the amount of people who have faith in some sort of God and religion can maybe give us an understanding of man's natural inclining an knowledge that there is a problem and it needs a solution, and that our denial of God is somewhat unnatural. Nonetheless, they--scientologists-- do have more than 10,000 churches worldwide. Yet most celebrities who have been in their church have also been given permission and have raised the ranks in order to lead some of these churches. These issues are important though, they affect real people who have real lives.
A museum? No. A scientology church.
Why the cross on your buildings? I thought you deny the resurrection of Jesus and the Bible? Could someone be manipulating.... Hmmm? Looking to feed off of another's identity and association perhaps?

Allegedly they have killed people and covered over the stories with big money, lawyers, etc. It is not confirmed if they have committed manslaughter but they have been charged in different felonies for the same cases:

Meet more Scientologists:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALVUus22NVc
The video begins by saying "I can understand how you would be curious because I mean you walk in and you go, what is it?"
First testimony... trying to get you to become curious. I think by now, we are ALL curious, but you guys keep it all a secret. Interesting that you would want to essentially better the world, but you force your members to pay for the information and wait for the saving hope to arrive to them. You are all very desperate to help the poor and needy right? Not at all. They try dissuade you of this by volunteering and helping with charity. I believe this is partly a scheme to be accepted by the media, public, an political stage as a legitimate religion. There are a number of countries who do not nationally recognize it as a religion.
Second testimony... focuses on the NEWNESS of the experience.
Third testimony... compares it to a regular church experience. It says that it is instead very modern looking, clean and a friendly atmosphere. So subtly she is sneaking in a comparison to churches today. Her comment is that they are not with the times and they are not clean or as pure looking as these. This focus on the new and modern era is a draw they are leaning on here. She is also subtly saying that they are more welcoming and more friendly than other places. I follow Jesus and am not a mormon, or scientologist as I have been speaking of, but even I can admit that they can be "friendly." But "niceness" and "friendliness" can be as deceptive, or real as southern hospitality. It can be a thing people do with false motives or with self in mind, or they can so because it is what people just do.
Next... they focus on the answers that they have provided for those who inquire. Without explaining simply what they believe they say, come in and see. Why do this? You have the answers and keys to life, right? Tell us, help us. What if I don't have a car? Or I don't live by one of your churches? I can almost feel the "give us your money" teeming under the breath. Certainly these people are genuine. But what is the motive?
The people in the video are not random people but people who are dressed up and more attractive. Why focus on celebrities and attractive people with make up? Why not your broken sinners redeemed by grace? Because they don't have those. People in scientology are redeemed by their bootstraps. You do it or you fail.
After this... they show clips of services where they look like a church building. And they make comparisons to say why it is similar. As I said before this is obviously not based on theology or a biblical like text but rather is an associative means of looking like a church. Luckily the true church is a body of believers and not a building.
Notice the music in the background, it sounds like built in music for a podcast. It sounds like the music for selling a crazy new product or for a business. Not for saving, redeeming, hope bringing truths?!
"There is also a personal aspect to it" --It sounds like an add. Even the color tint, being blue and darker seems to portray something closer to an apple commercial, a new university that no one has heard of, a new program in an old well known university, or some space age technology.
They tell us that it is kind of like a spiritual college. Interesting. What are the implications of this? College is for scholarly learning. Are they claiming to be EARNING degrees that differentiate them as better? It seems quite so. That they are setting themselves apart as being earners of something making them have more credentials for getting through life. Spirituality is to gain in the means of essentially the idea of the American Dream. To get better at something, in order to get what you want. To make more money, have more influence, these are the American Dream (stereotypically, at least, an American Marine might interpret the American Dream differently). But essentially the humanly goal to have and do something for temporary and personal gain alone. It is completely futile and foolish.
Was it not Jesus who said?
Matthew 16:26
English Standard Version (ESV)
26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
Their life journey is only to work, gain, and have... and in the end lose. No wonder their aren't many 70 year old people being advertised. Where are those who have lost their beauty or fame?
They provide courses, and they say that it is easy and practical. Again which is a modern twist to religion. The idea that today's religion doesn't serve people in their quick and hardworking lives. We need quick gratification and easy answers that are "practical" if they fit my personal needs. And guess what?! They even say that they accept any religion to come and visit and study--we actively promote beliefs counter to yours, but we scientologists will gladly take your money also. Because we are satan's tool to reach post-modernists. Have a nice day! smile.
"The whole point is that you are yourself." Great news guys! You can be yourself there. Few. Now all of us Christian hypocrites who actually are putting up lies and fronts can feel safe somewhere. The whole point is that you can be yourself purely because they are teaching that no one is telling you you have to be a certain way because we are here to serve the post-modern world. Your truth is valid also even though that very concept contradicts the second law of logic in thought. The law of non-contradiction clearly disproves the notion of relativity in truth. Essentially it teaches that you cannot be both pregnant and not pregnant at the same time. We learn things by finding patterns. We are comforted knowing that when we walk down the street we are not just going to sucked up into the sky randomly. Because gravity always pulls us down, its not chaos, there is a pattern. People would laugh if they saw you flinch at every step because you were afraid that chaos might randomly ensue. Or if somebody told you that they were a vampire. But they were obviously a human, then would you believe them? You might find this question strange but I grew up with a kid who actually believed that he was an actual vampire. He was convinced in his mind. Just because he had that reality didn't make both of ours true. There was one truth. New Age people... he was convinced! Oh it must be true for him eh?
Next time I read information about your doctrine, I'll just make sure that it is a pineapple for my reality so that it disappears.
They even have a purification process using modern gym-technology. We have real live pills, and saunas, and treadmills. We're better than all others. Interesting, where is your grip machine and neck machine then? Where is the dumbbell rack? It almost feels like a the world is playing a practical joke to satirically make fun of people and fake religion. This is what little kids do to mimic when they play house.
ALL WORSHIP THE SAUNA. It provides sweating. All worship modern-age technology.
Next the video begins speaking about the unique nature of the "audit" process.
The woman describes it by saying that,
"It finds the root; it finds the cause and handles that spiritually." Ever heard of an RSA? People use a system in churches often to find the roots and the lies a person believes that are not true about them and who they are in Christ. They try to discover self similarly. This should shake you up a bit Christian who relies on RSA's. The RSA process is not an evil in and of itself. But what is similar about it to the commercial? I would say that the similarity is the focus. The scientologists are only concerned with self and self-identity and discovery. We want to discover truth but we do not want to get lost in the past but to press on to finish the race. Paul says that he does not look to the past, he is a new creature in Christ. We are to focus our eyes on Jesus! The Spirit is what sanctifies us; not the law! The law can only bring death and condemnation. Our focus should not be on self but growing in knowledge, understanding and affection for Jesus. When we grow in knowing God--we also grow. But not by looking to self and self-improvement. However, we do need healing, to fight shame, and we do need to fight falsehoods and conceptions of God that are wrong. So reflecting through the help of RSA's and similar techniques or looking to self in counseling are not altogether bad. God can use them. But we should be wise and careful. Where is your undivided focus? Self, your issues, healing even? Or Jesus alone and trust in Him and His power.
Compare the music and style of commercialism that the scientology church uses to this NEW product... Scientologists, this might be nice to worship also:
